It is one of the departments of Utkal University devoted fully in developing quality manpower in the field of computer science.In order to grasp the need of information and technology the department of computer science and application was established in the year 1983, by the direct sponsorship of University Grant Commission and Department of Electronics.

The department expanded to provide M.C.A degree in the year 1990. Interestingly during a very short span of time it has occupied a very good position by its name and fame in the field of I.T not only in India but also in abroad by producing a huge number of qualitative professionals.Through a series of personality development programs undertaken by the department it is ensured that the student is moulded to suit the needs of growing technology field the world over.Now a days along with the regular MCA course,the department's IT environmentis also strengthed by the introduction of a number of sponsored Course s such as M.sc computer science, Integrated Master in Computer Application, M.sc informnation Technology and M.Tech Computer Science, under the aegis of School of Mathemamatics, Statistics and Computer Science.

The department advantageously having a special research project on "Indian Language Technology Solution", handed by Ministry of Communication and Information Technology (MCIT).In the project research and devlopment work on Image processing,Pertaining to OCR,Speech Processing like Text to Speech,speech Recognisation and Natural Language Processing for Machine-Aided Translation are being taken care of.Students get advantages for being exposed to this cutting edge technology of the era through project work.
